EDSF ANNOUNCES EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD
FOR INNOVATION IN CONTINUING EDUCATION

January 2006

The Electronic Document Systems Foundation (EDSF) has presented the Desktop Publishing course and print shop at Abram Friedman Occupational Center (AFOC) Division of Adult and Career Education in the Los Angeles Unified School District in Los Angeles, Calif. with the Innovation in Continuing Education Award. Sponsored by IBM Printing Systems, this award is presented to academic institutions or accredited training organizations that build and deliver programs and/or offer professional career development in innovative ways. The AFOC Desktop Publishing class and the print shop integrate real-world experiences in an adult education program, which provides students with marketable skills as they pursue careers in the document industry. EDSF is the non-profit organization dedicated to the document communications and enterprise content management industry.

"Receiving the EDSF Award for Innovation in Continuing Education exemplifies Abram Friedman Occupational Center's commitment to provide a career path for students wishing to better themselves," said Gayle R. Brodie, program director and instructor.

AFOC Desktop Publishing is a 1,200-hour course that covers a vast array of topics from basic computer literacy to prepress, production, and graphics software. Providing hands-on experience, the program begins with guided projects that produce the school's business cards and letterhead stationery. The program proceeds to portfolio projects that include magazine covers, newsletter layouts, posters, and CD designs. Not only do the students learn design and the use of design software, they receive training on state-of-the-art equipment. This program has successfully combined digital imaging and digital publishing into one program and one location for all continuing education students within Los Angeles.

Prior to her career as a teacher, Brodie owned three different graphic arts businesses. She has directed the AFOC Desktop Publishing class and print shop program for almost 10 years. She attends California State University at Los Angeles and is earning her bachelor of vocational education degree.
